Dead Sea Scrolls
Appearance
The Dead Sea Scrolls are a large corpus of ancient Yahwist manuscripts containing material from the Bible as well as many parabiblical (apocryphal) texts. They were written by ancient Jews of the Second Temple period. They were discovered in the Qumran caves near the Dead Sea between 1946 and 1956, starting with the discovery of the first few scrolls by Bedouin shepherds and their subsequent sale to an antiques dealer.
One of the best-known apocryphal works found among the Dead Sea Scrolls was the Book of Enoch in its Aramaic translation, which was previously unknown; before the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Book of Enoch was only known from the Ge'ez language spoken in ancient Ethiopia.
