Phanuel

From Grigoripedia

Phanuel, also known as Fanuel or Penuel, is an archangel in the service of Yahweh. His specific angelic order is uncertain, but he is known to belong to the Delegate group of angels, whose duties involve direct interaction with humans and/or the physical realm. His name is generally interpreted to mean "face of God."

Phanuel appears in the Yahwist Book of Enoch and the Satano-Grigorist Book of the Watchers and the Acts of Enoch as one of the "archangels who watch." The Book of Enoch describes Phanuel as the angel who is set over "the repentance unto hope of those who inherit eternal life," while the Book of the Watchers and the Acts of Enoch states that his assigned duty is "to collect and organize the humans and spirits who repent for sins against" Yahweh.

Both texts identify Phanuel as one of four prominent archangels who stand before Yahweh, alongside Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. During one of Enoch's visions, Phanuel is described as preventing the accusing angels from freely approaching Yahweh to bring accusations against humanity. In the Satano-Grigorist account, these accusers are identified as the servants of Samael, and Phanuel is said to regulate when they may present their accusations.

Phanuel also accompanies Enoch during his visions, explaining the identity and role of Yahweh's Messiah, the Son of Man, and showing him various places associated with the coming judgement. In both texts, Phanuel is among the four archangels who are to participate in the punishment of those associated with Azazel, casting the condemned into a burning furnace on the day of judgement.

Name and identification

The name Phanuel is etymologically related to the Hebrew Peniel or Penuel, meaning "face of God." In the Hebrew Bible, Peniel is the name given by Jacob to the place where he wrestled with a mysterious divine being, as described in Genesis 32.

Some scholars have suggested that Phanuel may have originally been identified with Uriel or Sariel, since he sometimes occupies the position among the four principal archangels that Uriel or Sariel holds in other angelic traditions. However, Satano-Grigorism regards Phanuel, Uriel, and Sariel as distinct beings.
