Sarakiel

From Grigoripedia
Not to be confused with Sariel.

Sarakiel (also known as Saraqael, Suriel, Suriyel, Souriel, Sauriel, Seriel, or Surufel) is an archangel in the service of Yahweh. He belongs to the order of ishim (dynames), the angels who wield naphsha and work miracles. His name is thought to mean "God is my ruler." Sarakiel is sometimes also called Sariel; this can cause confusion between the loyal angel Sarakiel and the distinct fallen Watcher Sahariel, who also uses the name Sariel.

Sarakiel is mentioned in the Yahwist Book of Enoch and the Satano-Grigorist Book of the Watchers and the Acts of Enoch as one of the "archangels who watch." The Book of Enoch states that Sarakiel is "set over the spirits who sin in the spirit," while the Book of the Watchers and the Acts of Enoch states that his assigned duty in this context is "to watch the spirits and the gods who may stand against Yahweh."

Other textual references

Sarakiel is also referenced in the War of the Sons of Light Against the Sons of Darkness, or the War Scroll for short, which is a parabiblical text that was found among the Dead Sea Scrolls. The War Scroll mentions him alongside Michael, Raphael, and Gabriel as an angel whose name should be written on the shields of Yahwist soldiers.

Another parabiblical text, the Conflict of Adam and Eve with Satan, states that Sarakiel (as Suriyel) and Salathiel were the two angels who brought Adam and Eve down from a high mountain.

In the Ladder of Jacob, Sarakiel acts as a messenger to Jacob.
